Monteith Mindfulness Newsletter Update
“Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment with kindness and curiosity so we can choose our behavior.” Amy Saltzman –Author of A Still Quiet Place
Week 1: Hello, my name is Kristin Ervin and I’ll be teaching mindfulness to your student(s) over the next 8 weeks. I’ll visit the classroom twice a week for 15 minutes and introduce a new lesson each time. In between the days I come, students will be listening to guided audio practices that reinforce the lessons being taught in the formal training. Parents and families can participate in those lessons as well by signing up to be notified either via email or text message and receiving the link to the audio track of the day. Please contact your student’s teacher to participate.
On Tuesday, we learned about mindful bodies and mindful listening. Mindful bodies help us become still and pay better attention (to listening, for example). Ask your student to show you what a mindful body looks like. Along with every lesson, I challenge the students to practice their new skills a few times before we meet again, so on Tuesday, we talked about when they could practice mindful listening again and how that might be helpful.
On Thursday, the students were introduced to mindful breathing and learned how to stay focused on their breathing by identifying where they could feel it in their body. Points in the body where the kids could sense the movement of their breath (like their bellies or chest as they rise and fall) are anchors for their awareness. This is a very foundational practice that we will continue to build upon.
I will attempt to keep these updates brief, so please contact me if you have any further questions or would like to know more: [email protected].
*If you’d like to know more about mindfulness, please visit www.mc4me.org/events and join us in October for a mindful parenting talk at Birmingham Groves High School.
