I hope that everyone is safe during our snow fall this weekend. Our 100th day of school was supposed to be today February 9th, but it will now be delayed until Monday February 12th, due to the snow day. Have a little fun outside!
Reminders:
Monday February 12 at lunchtime, sign up for March parent teacher conferences will be sent out! Let me know if you have any questions.
Please bring in your decorated valentine boxes and valentines on Wednesday February 14.
February 19-23 No school
February 28th- I will place another scholastic book order. (Our last month order was scheduled to be there today. I will send home books when I get them.)
March 2- Read Across America and Dr. Seuss's birthday (more information to come about this fun day!)
Math Workshop
We have finished unit 5. We started our unit 5 math test, but is not completely finished because of the writing portion. I am still in the middle of meeting with students to verbally explain their writing or thinking about the math concepts. Once I have checked the Unit 5 math journals, I will send them home. We will be moving into our new math journal when we begin unit 6. I will not start unit 6 until we return from winter break. We will be having a week of science in the morning to replace math next week only. I will still send home some math fact practice sheets for home work.
Science Exploration
We will have a week full of states of matter. We will begin to learn and explore the matter around us. We will explore solids, liquids and gases.
Writing workshop
We have almost finished our rough draft of or how-to. This is a tough process. They are using the plans that were homework last week. Each student needed to use the 12 squares with pictures and a couple words to create a complete sentence. Understanding what a complete sentence should have in it is very difficult. Next week we will move into writing and illustrating our final draft. Our goal is to be completely done before winter break.
Reading workshop
We are still in the midst of learning about nonfiction text features. We learned about comparisons and maps. We were not able to learn about as many this week because we were catching up the students who were out sick We will finish up our nonfiction text features next week.
Word study
We learned about words that have 's' added to the end. We learned that sometimes when 's' is added it means that there is 2 or more of something. ex: 1 cat, 2 cats. Other times we add 's' to the end of a verb to show it is happening now. sits, gets, runs. The verbs with 's' were a little bit more difficult to understand.
