Parents,
Tonight you will have a wonderful opportunity to hear about a program that we are using call Mindfulness. I hope that many of you can make it to understand what it is that we are doing in our classroom every day.
I would like to share with you that it is something that requires a quiet atmosphere. I noticed that the first time that I did this with the students we all felt a little awkward because we are so used to a nonstop lifestyle. It is nice for everyone to just calm ourselves with our breathing. We have had about a month of practice. The awkward feeling has gotten better, but it takes practice, just like learning to read. We also have had to reflect about some of the things we are learning about and this is where some of the most amazing things happen in our classroom. One of the topics was generosity. This sparked a great community service idea from one of our students.
One of our students was having some nervous feelings about family members that lived in Florida back when hurricane Mathew was coming through the east coast. We had a quick conversation about what everyone will be doing to prepare for the hurricane. I gave a homework assignment about things that we "first graders" could do to help all the way here from Michigan. I was amazed at the amount of ideas that we brain stormed. We finally decided that we will be writing letters to other first graders at a school that is in need. We also received a class set of books from scholastic. As a class we decided to give these books to this first grade class. All of this was first thought of during one of the mindfulness lessons.
I hope that you will be able to join us tonight at 5:30!
