March is officially here! Wow is the weather crazy! Our first graders are really starting to experience some bizarre Michigan weather. This is also making our year long science unit of weather an interesting one.
We have had our first Mystery reader in classroom! The students loved the Ms. Pam reading about how a snail helped a whale! If you are not signed up and would like to see if there are some other dates extending into April let me know because I think all spaces are filled.

Important information:
Reading workshop
Students are doing an amazing job using the nonfiction text features to help them understand books that they are reading. We are noticing that all nonfiction books and articles may not have every text feature. We have been reading our animal books to help find information for our writing project! We are using our text features to read and find only the information that we need from the book by using our table of contents and index.
Writing Workshop
Our animal research project is just beginning. We are at the point where we will be gathering information about our animals. Today we worked on habitat. Next we are going to find more information on what they look like, food they eat, babies, predators and other interesting facts.
Math workshop
We are continuing our to look at facts by using fact families and the everyday math triangles (which are fancy flash cards). The everyday math triangles are used to have students really think about the 3 fact family numbers and the relationship they have with each other when using addition and subtraction.
Science
We have started our science unit on matter. Today we really got to look at the properties of a solid and touch different types of solids to figure out the different properties.
Dr. Seuss's Birthday!
Yesterday the students had such a fun day! We started our day with One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. We talked about how Dr. Seuss master the art of rhyming words. This lead into our math activity. Each student received a baggy of rainbow goldfish. We sorted them by color and figured out how many fish were in each color. We used tally marks, graphs, estimating, and odd and even, to look at all the information that we gathered. This was a create data collecting activity. Of course then they were able to eat them if they chose to.
After lunch, we read There's a Wocket in my Pocket. We again talked about the rhyming words and noticed a pattern that Dr.Seuss used in the story. He used a "seussy" rhyming words for the name of an animal and it rhymed with a thing. For example, "There's a wasket in my basket." We created our own list of "seussy" words that rhyme with pocket. From there we created a "seussy" animal that will go into a pocket. These cute projects will be on our back wall or in the hall way.
We continued with listening to Green Eggs and Ham. Everyone found a cozy spot with there blankets and pillows to read with a friend while I was cooking up my own green eggs and ham. We shut the drapes and turned off the lights so we could read with our flashlights. While we were reading, our challenge was to find as many different rhyming words we could.
We enjoyed the green eggs and ham...some loved the green eggs and ham, while other were too spooked to even try! See the picture below to see our eventful day!
- One school One book: We are reading “The Lemonade War” by Jacqueline Davies.
- Today a book and schedule of what chapters to read when will be sent home.
- Please make sure that you are following the schedule because there will be comprehension questions the students have to answer. The correct responses will be collected to have a chance for a raffle at the end of the book.
- I will be reading the book to the class if someone did not read at home that night.
- Summer birthdays: If your child has a summer birthday, they can celebrate their half birthday or another day throughout the school year. Please give me heads up so it is not overlapping with anyone else.
- Conference times and dates will be sent home some time in the next couple weeks. Please be looking for it to make sure the time works for you.
