Wow, it is November! I feel as if I just had Back to School Night.
We were busy, busy, busy this week!
Math workshop
We have been moving along with our math sections. We are ending the week with using a number line to add and subtract. You will find that Everyday Math will use many different kinds of strategies to help your child understand different concepts. I encourage students to use the strategy that I am teaching with the concept to see if this is one way that will work well for them. For example, adding. We can use different ways to add. Use a number, use a number grid, use fingers, draw a picture, use tally marks, etc. I would like for students to use the way that works for them, but to try the way that I am teaching as well and check their answer with the way that they are more comfortable using.
Writing workshop
We have started writing in little books. Your child is an author! This week we went with a Halloween theme! They are creating amazing stories, adding illustrations and going back in their story and making sure they have capital letters for the beginning of sentences, for names and for the letter I. Today we will be taking a look at spacing and end marks. You will be able to see these books during conferences.
Reading workshop
We have started our new reading groups. Our new rotations will start on Monday. The students will be rotating between partner reading, independent reading, computers and guided reading with me. Each student has a just right level that they are reading at. I have see so much growth in reading so far this year! I will be retesting students on their sight words in the next couple weeks.
Classroom Jobs
Last night your child had homework! Almost every student went home and completed this! This means your child went home put first things first and put work first, then played. This is extremely hard to do as a young child! Your child showed you that they can be responsible for their own work and turn it in the next day! WOW! Your should be so proud!
I am encouraging your to challenge your child, give them a little more responsibility. Let your child choose 2 chores or things to be in charge of at home. Let them make mistakes and have them come to you with suggestions. They will take more ownership of the chore if they are interested in it and make it their own. You will be amazed with what they are capable of.
At this point of the year your child should be walking in by themselves in the morning. Give them a big kiss and hug know that they are able to handle this responsibility.
Don't forget to turn back the clocks!!!
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly about conference times! Reminders will be coming home soon.
I hope you enjoy your weekend!
