Reading Workshop
We have finished our unit on checking for understanding. Students focused on ways to check to see if they understand the text they are reading. Our main focus was using story elements to help us check our comprehension. The story elements that we focused on were characters, setting, problem, solution and theme. Some strategies that can be practiced are using pictures to help, go back and reread and checking if there are any words that your child does not understand that you can help give a meaning too.
Writing Workshop
This week we finished our unit of how-to writing! Something happened that created a very authentic writing experience for our first grader. We started by reading a funny book called How to Loose All Your Friends. We were going to write about how to make hot chocolate and do a craft to publish the project. Things changed when a few students made comments on how we could write about how to make friends. I asked if they knew who was the audience they wanted to write for. They came up with some good ideas, but then a student mentioned that Kindergarten would be the perfect grade to make books to help them make friends. We paired up, created a storyboard of four things that will help you make friends, edit, published with illustrations, added a cover and a dedication page. We will be giving these amazing creations to kindergarten this week. I will make sure that I have these book available for you to see during March conferences! WOW were they amazing!
Math workshop
We are finishing up Unit 5. We will be reviewing on Monday for the math test on Tuesday. We will have our pretest for unit 6 on Wednesday or Thursday. We will begin Unit 6 on Thursday or Friday.
