In first grade we observe Michigan weather all year long. We are starting to see what fall really looks like. Remember as the weather starts to change, please put your child's name on the jackets and other items just in case they are forgotten around the school.
Math workshop
We have really established a smooth routine for our math stations. We have finished unit one. On Friday, we sent home a graph, pretest and postest for unit 1. As every child sat down with me to talk about their graph and how much they improved, their faces lit up with pride. This is a great visual to understand where their math knowledge started and how much they learned. We have jumped into unit 2. We are focusing on adding and subtracting within 10. We are using ten frames to help visualize relationships of numbers within 10. We will continue this throughout this next week coming up.
Reading workshop
We have been practicing our reading stations in preparation for next week rotations. We have learned about teacher time and the importance of solving non emergency problems on their own without interrupting teacher time. We talked about when we read books and we are reminded of other books and times in our own life. We practiced reading our scholastic news with our partner reader. Lastly, we are picking out books that are at our just right levels. These are levels that your child can read mostly on their own. I have received some Raz kids parent emails. If you would like to get the weekly reports, please send in the half sheet from last week.
Writing workshop
This week in writing we have continued to use our hand to help us plan our writing. We used Mo Williams as a mentor to help us use speech bubbles in our stories as beginning way to have characters talk. We also used Pete the Cat Train Trip to help us focus on our setting in our stories. We also learned how stories can have more than one setting. We learned that a writers job during a writing conference is to tell about their story, listen to the teacher about something new to try, and then to try the suggestion in their writing.
We have planned a field trip to the Parcells play Suessical! PLease turn in money and permission slip as soon as possible. If you would like to help drive and chaperone, I will send an additional paper work home. Thank you for your support and partnership in First grade! Let me now if you have any questions!
