Reading workshop
We have been reviewing our decoding strategies to help us figure out words that we do not know. Looking for words inside of larger words, using our fingers to break apart words to sound them out and blend them back together, using pictures to help, flipping vowel sounds and getting our mouth ready. We read our scholastic news about Martin Luther King Jr. We talked about the unfair and bad laws that kept people apart. We talked about how unfair it was by using our eye color. I told students that if they had blue eyes, they had to clean the room, brown eyes could enjoy their favorite books, green eyes had bathroom clean up and hazel eyes could do anything they wanted. Of course, immediately the blue and green eyed students said that was unfair! This was our beginning of understanding the bad and unfair laws that were and helped understand why Dr. King worked so hard to change them.
Writing Workshop
We are focusing on end marks. We will be continuing this into next week and talking more about capitals at the beginning of sentences and when using names. We listened to very short version of Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" speech. We talked about his dream coming true. We worked together and created a list of dreams that we have and hope will come true one day.
Math workshop
We finally finished Unit 4! We took our unit test today. For this unit, there is not a pretest because the unit test is cumulative, testing information that has been learned from the beginning of the year until now. We have learned more ways to measure with a nonstandard unit of measurement.
Word Work
We have been studying short a word families. We will be moving on to short i word families next week. In your child's folder there will be a packet of sight word articles. This is part of their word work during reading rotations. I have asked to students to show parents at home this packet and to read it. The sight work practiced will be highlighted. Any words that are circled are words that your child did not know or that they did not know the meaning.
I will see you on Tuesday!
