This week was definitely a short one!
Reading Workshop
We have started to read "how to" books. We are learning about all different kinds of things. We have been looking at these books to help us understand how to read these books. We have been finding more sight words in our work word as well as making different words with the letters that make the word "snowman". Students had to rearrange these letters to come up with as many different words as possible. It was very interesting the variety of words and our "seussy" words we could make as well.
Writing workshop
To go along with our "how to" books in reading, we are learning how to write "how to" books. This week we started with How to make Hot chocolate! Any how to writing has to come from experience, so we made hot chocolate on Wednesday. Wow, did everyone in the class enjoy this! Thursday, we made a list of our materials we would need and created steps to make this delicious treat. Friday we wrote our final draft and we were able to create our crafty hot chocolate activity.
Math Workshop
We have started unit 5. This unit focuses on place value. We will mainly focus on the ones and tens place value. I will add in the hundreds as the unit goes on. Along with our usual math home links, I will be sending some math fact pages. When you receive these, start by timing your child. See how many they can do in three minutes or less. If they are unable to finish, work with them using different ways to help them figure out the answers. If your child was able to finish the pages under 3 minutes, keep timing them and see if they can get faster and faster. I will start with addition problems and them move on to subtraction. The point is to help your child be proficient in their math facts up to 20. Please let me know if you have any questions.
