Weather has been a topic of conversation this week! We have had snow, rain, and a beautiful 70 degree day. I hope that some of you were able to enjoy the beautiful weather we had on Thursday!
We have 44 more schools as first graders! We have been working very hard to transition into getting ready for 2nd grade.
I have been giving students a little more responsibility in the classroom. Yes, everyone have been amazing with this challenge. Continue to challenge your child at home as well . Give your child another way to help out at home or maybe help a neighbor with something.
Reminders
Entering the building in the morning...
1. Only students are to enter the south doors in the morning at arrival.
2. If you need to drop something off in the office or come in to volunteer, you still need to walk around and enter at the parking lot doors, sign in at the office and go to your location.
3. We are not trying to be unwelcoming, but it is more a safety issue.
If you have any questions about this please email, call or write a note. Thank you for understanding!
Word study
We have been practicing the spelling pattern of magic e. When we have a magic e at the end of a word it changes the vowel sound in front of it to says its name (long vowel sound) and not the short vowel sound. A few weeks ago we had words with long a and with magic e at the end. For example, game. This week we focused on long i with magic e at the end. For example, time. We are continuing to practice our sight words by searching for certain sight words with different reading passages. We get to use our highlighters as a tool to show where these sight words are in the passage.
Math Workshop
We are in the midst of unit 7. We have been talking about fact families and using our triangle cards to help us practice. For homework there have been triangles sent home. There are to stay home because we have our own set here. This is another way to practice math facts in both addition and subtraction while using 3 #'s to create 2 addition facts and 2 subtraction facts. We dove into shapes and their attributes this week. We will continue to explore this as our units continue.
Writing and reading workshop
We have started our nonfiction writing project! It started just before break and we have continued the project. In our animal groups, we have gathered information about our 7 different animals with our just right animal books. We wrote our facts that we found on our group chart paper. Yesterday was our first day of rough draft writing. We started by writing at least one of the facts that we found about physical characteristics. Check out our pictures below of our collaboration in action!
We had a recycling presentation from GFL (Green For Life). They taught us all about how to recycle and what we are able to recycle. Look in your child's blue folder for the information about today's presentation!
